Check out the video included below to meet local Philadelphia women in the construction trades and hear their stories.

This video is brought to you by the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), and created in part by M&SCA Member and NAWIC Philadelphia Board Member Mary Gaffney.  Mary is President and Owner of family-owned business GEM Mechanical Services, a commercial HVAC construction company.

Philadelphia Chapter 145 of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) was chartered on July 15, 1967 by twenty-six women who sought to enhance their knowledge of the construction industry. These women were employed in various aspects of the industry. Their immediate goals were education and networking. When they learned about NAWIC, they decided it was just what they were looking for. Since those early days, they continue to seek these same goals.

The construction industry has been and continues to be male dominated, with women making up less than 10 percent of the workforce.  Recruiting more women to work in construction could bolster the industry's diminishing labor force and help address the country's current shortage of construction workers.  It is the goal of NAWIC to promote this potential talent pool and continue to increase the number of women choosing careers in the construction industry.

One way the Philadelphia Chapter of NAWIC promotes women in the construction industry is their MAGIC (Mentoring a Girl in Construction) Camp.  MAGIC is free, week-long day camp for 7th to 12th grade girls to introduce them to a potential career in the construction industry.  Many young girls are unaware of the possibility of a rewarding and financially beneficial career in the construction trades or related fields.  MAGIC is designed to give them real hands-on experience.  They continue to partner with several of the local trade unions to make this experience possible for young girls in Philadelphia.
